There are so many different types of countertop Ice Makers on the market today that it’s hard to know which one is the best and which one will do what you need it to do.
Not all portable ice makers are created equal – that’s for sure.
Spending a lot of money on an ice maker maybe not the best option for you.
There are times when a $100 portable ice maker will do the trick.
Maybe you’re looking for a simple functioning countertop ice maker for camping, boating or taking with you on your RV. This is when a basic portable ice maker will work well. Something simple, lightweight and compact would make a perfect ice maker in those types of scenarios.
It can be difficult sorting through all of the different ice makers that are available and knowing which one is the best. There are simple points to remember when looking for a basic portable ice maker:
- You want to make sure it has good reviews. No unit will be perfect, but you want to make sure the overall rating is high.
- You want to make sure the portable ice maker is 20 lbs or lighter if you plan on transporting it. Heavier machines become hard to transport and bulky to carry.
- You want to make sure that they are easy to clean. If your portable ice maker is hard to clean or keep clean then you don’t want to bring it camping or with you on a RV.
- You want to make sure that it produces enough ice to meet your needs.
- Lastly, make sure that it produces the type of ice that you need. Ice shape and ice size can be important if you’re looking for a specific size/shape for a specific purpose.
So, what are my options? There are lots of ice makers that are in the $100-$150 range. You could take a look at the hOmeLabs Portable Ice Maker which comes in at about $150. The Frigidaire EFIC115-SS is a great ice maker with high reviews. It’s one of our favorites on Ice Maker Geeks, but it’s more than $100.
Is there a portable ice maker that we can purchase that’s under $100. That’s right $100 or at least as close to $100 as we can get.
We’re not going to nickel and dime a purchase – we don’t want to buy junk. Is there an ice maker on the market that is good, will work well and still be under or around $100?
I don’t want just to throw out just any ice maker’s name. I want to make sure that you get an ice maker that we’re going to love and use for years to come.
Let’s take a look at my pick.
This is My Review of the RCA Compact Ice Maker, An Ice Maker That Costs the Closest to $100 With The Best Reviews .
I want to begin this review by saying that this ice maker is proven reliable by its thousands of reviews and its 4+ rating.
This bold RED ice maker has been purchased numerous times and is used camping, RVing and Boating time and time again. This ice maker is absolutely perfect for all those portable activities. Looking for an ice maker for a picnic – this is the one!
It’s A Great Size
It weighs about 20 pounds, which gives it an average weight for a portable ice maker.
It Works Hard
It produces 26 pounds of ice every day which is pretty good for a portable ice maker that’s priced at the $100 point.
Any portable ice maker that produces 26 pounds of ice each day is a perfect unit for for gatherings of 4 people or less.
For More Than 4 Guests Just Plan Ahead
If you are planning on hosting more than four people, I would suggest planning ahead and putting the ice in bags and placing them in the freezer.
I found a great deal on ice bags on Amazon.com, and you can click on the link provided to check them out. This ice maker can hold one and half pounds of ice at one time and has a decent sized water reservoir.
No Built-In Freezer
It does not keep the ice frozen because this unit does not have a built-in freezer. The ice maker has an insulated storage bin, but the ice will melt over time. Most portable ice makers recycles the melted ice and makes more ice. If you leave your machine running all night you’re going to noice the frail half-melted ice on the bottom of your ice bin and fresh ice on the top.
Ice Ready in About 10 Minutes
Every 8-10 minutes it makes ice which is dumped into the holding basket.
Just add water into the reservoir, and you’re ready to go.
Overall It’s Truly Portable
There are no water lines and no messy hookups. This portable ice maker uses 160 watts of power which doesn’t calculate the compressor. The description they provide about the product can be a little misleading and confusing. I would say that the wattage would be closer to 400 watts if you are looking to use this unit on a generator. Here is the generator that I use which you can check it out on Amazon.
Overall, this portable ice maker checks all the right boxes for a $100 unit.
It makes bullet-shaped or helment-shaped ice which is closer to the white shade color wise. The ice is soft and can be chewed if you enjoy chewing ice.
It doesn’t make pellet ice which is smaller and better for chewing. If you want the ice to be harder than just throw it in the freezer.
The ice maker comes with a scoop which isn’t the best. It’s better to invest in a better scoop from Amazon. You could continue to use the scoop that comes with it if you are using it camping or on the go. If you do happen to lose the scoop it’s not a big loss.
This is a perfect ice maker for the price point. It’s not huge, but it’s not too small either.
it makes a great amount of ice for normal use and it’s light enough to carry around.
